Modern at GDA

At GDA we follow one of the most widely recognised and highly respected syllabi with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance (ISTD).

Modern is a technical style of dance, it follows stucture and specifics to stengthen and align the dancer. It gives a very strong technical base for genres like Jazz and Contemporary, even Commercial and Street styles.

Which Grade am I?

Primary Trio - For children aged 4-7 yrs. This class also encorporates Modern and Ballet.

Primary - For children aged 5+ until they take an exam or are invited to move up to Grade 1.

Grades 1 - 6 - For students aged 7+ until they take an exam or are invited to move up to the next grade.

Intermediate and above - These grades are for students who have passed all their graded examinations. These levels can also earn the student UCAS points.

Grades are not just based on age, but also previous dance experience and individual ability.

For new students - If you are unsure which Grade to select then please contact us for info, where you can be temporarily placed for assessment.

For existing students - Please select the grade you were most recently in unless you have had a successful exam result and/or have been asked to move to a different grade by Miss Wendy.

What do I wear?

If you are new to class, then please arrive dressed in clothing that you can move freely in, e.g., Leggings and a T-shirt. Bare feet are acceptable, hair must be secured away from the face. Please also bring water.

Uniform must be worn in classes (with the exception of Adult Classes) after your trial ends, which can be purchased from our online store or our on-site dance shop.  This consists of Leotard, tights/leggings, foot thongs/Jazz shoes, and some additional extras for some grades. The style of leotard also depends on which grade you are in, these details can be found in the uniform section of our website, or a member of staff can help you at the studio.
